SALT LAKE CITY — Morgan Nokes won her second individual title in a row to lead Utah Valley women's cross country to the team title at the Beehive Invitational at Sugar House Park on Friday morning in Salt Lake City.
Nokes ran another dominating race to win her second meet in a row after winning the UVU Invitational two weeks ago in Orem. Nokes' 17:14.69 was 38 seconds better than the next-best collegiate finisher, Shelby Jensen of Utah State.
The Wolverine Women also took home their second straight team title to start the season, narrowly beating host Utah with a score of 36 points, five better than the Utes' 41. Behind Nokes, Ari Trimble (3rd, 17:53.35), Paisley Taylor (9th, 18:27.53), and Natalia Boltz (10th, 18:30.63) led the Wolverines with a meet-best four of the top 10 attached finishers.
The Wolverine Men narrowly took second to Utah State, with the two squads racking up an equal 28 points, but the Aggies winning via tiebreaker. For the second meet in a row, Wyatt Mortenson was UVU's top finisher on the men's side, finishing second among attached runners with a 7k time of 21:30.62.
Utah Valley had five of the top 10 attached finishers on the men's side, with Porter Whitworth (5th, 21:56.34), Cameron Jacobs (6th, 22:05.41), Samuel Nelson (7th, 22:06.42), and Caleb Ream (8th, 22:06.47) among the best.
The Wolverines will now take another week off before heading to Columbia, Mo., on Sept. 26 for the Gans Creek Classic hosted by Missouri. The Gans Creek Cross Country Course will be the site of this season's NCAA Championships. The men's race will start at 7 a.m. MDT, with the women's race following at 7:45.
