OREM, Utah — Utah Valley dropped its first home Big 12 dual of the season, falling 29-6 to Wyoming on Saturday night at Lockhart Arena.

The Wolverines earned wins from Zyon Trujillo and No. 18 Haiden Drury, but the Cowboys claimed eight of the 10 bouts.

"Today was not our day. I challenged our guys to have a short memory and to have the right mindset as we prepare for two big duals next week," head coach Adam Hall said. "We will continue to face adversity head on and move forward. I appreciate all the fans who showed up tonight and I hope that they are there supporting us next week as well."

The dual opened at 157 pounds, where No. 31 Jared Hill scored the lone takedown in a 4-1 decision over Mark Takara to give Wyoming an early 3-0 lead. At 165, Trujillo broke a 1-1 tie in the third period by finishing a single-leg takedown on Sloan Swan with 1:13 remaining. Swan escaped, but Trujillo held on for a 4-2 decision to even the dual at 3-3.

At 174, Hudson Rogers' upset bid against No. 28 Riley Davis came up short in a 4-2 decision. No. 12 Eddie Neitenbach followed with an 8-2 win over Caleb Uhlenhopp at 184 after building a 7-0 lead with a takedown and near fall in the first.

Both teams used backups at 197 with No. 28 Kael Bennie sidelined for Utah Valley due to injury. Wyoming's Gunner Henry recorded a 21-6 technical fall over Christian Slack, using riding time to secure the bonus points and push the Cowboy lead to 14-3. At heavyweight, No. 9 Christian Carroll added a 16-5 major decision over Jack Forbes.

Wyoming earned the first of two upset wins on the night at 125, as Isaiah Harrison scored a takedown with nine seconds remaining to defeat No. 27 Bridger Ricks, 6-4.

The first of two ranked matchups came at 133 between No. 31 Geronimo Rivera and No. 27 Luke Willochell. Rivera scored first with a takedown, but Willochell answered with a reversal to trail 3-2 after the first period. A video review awarded Rivera a two-point near fall in the second, giving him a 5-3 lead entering the third. Willochell responded with a four-point near fall to pick up the win with a 7-5 decision.

Drury shut out John Alden, 5-0, at 141. After a scoreless first period, Drury earned an escape and takedown, then rode Alden for the entire third period to add a riding time point.
In the final bout, No. 26 Gabe Willochell scored a 16-1 technical fall (7:00) over No. 10 David Evans at 149. It marked Evans' first match since the Cliff Keen Invitational in early December.

Utah Valley is hosting the UVU Rockwell Open on Sunday beginning at 10 a.m. MST. Admission to the open is free with the matches set to air of FloWrestling.

Utah Valley returns home next weekend to host two ranked Big 12 opponents. The Wolverines will face No. 8 South Dakota State on Friday, Jan. 16, followed by No. 19 Missouri on Saturday. Both duals are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. MST at Lockhart Arena.
