Utah Valley Game Notes
LAST TIME OUT
Utah Valley suffered its first defeat of the season on Saturday, falling on the road to the preseason Big West favorite UC Santa Barbara, 3-2. The Wolverines rallied back from a 3-0 deficit to make it a one-goal game late, with Jose Montealegre and Brayden Tester netting goals in the comeback effort.
Utah Valley matched its program record for longest unbeaten streak to start a season at seven games, which had also been done in the last two seasons. It was also the second time in the last three years the Gauchos knocked the Wolverines from the ranks of the unbeatens, defeating UVU at Clyde Field in 2024. Utah Valley was also the only team in the country to end September unbeaten in each of the last two seasons.
Oliver Watts capped off a big week by earning Big West Rookie of the Week honors. Watts scored his first collegiate goal against UC Irvine — a game-winner — then had the secondary assist on Tester’s goal at UCSB.
Ashton Wheeler picked up his first collegiate point on Tester's goal with the primary assist. Wheeler is the 14th different player with a goal contribution this season.
Utah Valley's team goals-against average of .875 leads The Big West and ranks 24th in the nation. The team record for a full season is .75 set in 2014.
Last Wednesday's win over UCI was the team's first in its league-play opener since 2021 after losing each of the last four. It was also the team's first shutout in league play since 2024 at California Baptist.
SCOUTING THE TITANS
Fullerton bounced back from an 0-3-3 start to win four straight over the likes of San Jose State, San Diego State, UC San Diego, and UC Riverside before dropping its Big West opener on Saturday to UC Irvine. Senior midfielder and Preseason All-Big West honoree Fernando Valenzuela has lived up to the billing, scoring a team-leading five goals to go with two assists.
SERIES HISTORY VS CAL STATE FULLERTON
Utah Valley leads the all-time series, 2-1, including a win at Fullerton in 2017. The Titans won the most recent meeting, 2-0 in Fullerton back in 2019. The first meeting between the two programs in 2015 featured an historic comeback, as the Wolverines turned a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 lead in the span of just 1:16, the fastest consecutive goals in program history. The first of those two goals was scored by current Director of Performance Alex Neff.
