STOCKTON, Calif. — Lily Riley tossed 6.1 shutout innings and Angelique Mann and Mya Higareda combined for five RBIs to lead Utah Valley to a 7-0 win over the Pacific Tigers in a Saturday doubleheader split at Bill Simoni Field.
The Wolverines dropped the second half of the twin bill by a score of 5-2, with UVU's seventh-inning rally falling short after bringing the tying run to the plate.
Riley continued her dominant form of late to keep the Tigers off the board. Pacific got both of its hits in game one in the fourth inning, with Riley allowing just two other baserunners on an error and a walk.
GAME ONE
Utah Valley scored in the first inning for the 12th time this season after Britney Moreno led off the game with a double and Megan Sterzer reached on a hit by pitch. With two outs and runners on second and third, Emma Haygood ripped a single through the right side that plated Moreno, but the throw was in time to get the trailing Sterzer.
The Wolverines doubled that advantage with another run in the second courtesy of some well-executed small ball. Amber Rodriguez doubled down the left field line, was bunted over to third by Tatum Hall, then brought home on a groundout by Higareda.
Utah Valley pushed the lead to 4-0 in the fourth with a two-run single by Mann that scored Ry Binne and Moreno. Pacific broke up the no-hit bid in the home half of the frame with a pair of singles to lead off the inning, but Riley was able to strand them without any damage.
Another two-spot was put up in the fifth with a two-out rally paying dividends. Rodriguez bunted for a hit and Hall reached on a walk, then both advanced on a wild pitch to set up Higareda, who poked a single up the middle to score both.
The Wolverines capped the scoring in the seventh with Hall legging out an infield single to score Lexie Balfanz.
Hannah Ortega came on in the bottom of the seventh to face her hometown team, picking up a strikeout and a flyout for the final two outs. Ortega hails from nearby Linden, about 20 minutes east of Stockton.
GAME TWO
Pacific flipped the script in game two, holding the Wolverines to just one run on one hit through the first six innings.
The big inning came in the third, with the Tigers rallying for three off of starter Ella Miller.
Bailey Marvin cut into the deficit with a solo homer in the fourth, but Pacific matched that with a run of their own in the home half and tacked on another in the fifth to make it 5-1.
Utah Valley wouldn't go quietly in the seventh, as Payge Armendariz led off the inning with a double to left center. Another single by Rodriguez put runners at the corners with no one out, but Tiger ace Alexa Lewis retired the next two batters to put the Wolverines on the brink
Ry Binne dunked a single down the left field line to make it 5-2 and get the tying run to the plate in Moreno, but the senior grounded out sharply to short to end the ballgame.
The rubber match of this three-game series will be tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. MT. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN+, with live stats available at
