Scott reaches semis but Final X bid comes up short at World Team Trials

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky — Ed Scott advanced to the semifinals of the World Team Trials on Thursday but came up short in his bid to earn a spot at next month's Final X in New Jersey.

Scott, a first-year Wolverine assistant following his All-American career at NC State, opened the 70kg weight class as the No. 6 seed against Alec Pantaleo in a quarterfinal match. After falling behind 6-0 in the first period, Scott stormed back with 10 points in the second, sealing the match with a 2-point takedown with 49 seconds left. Pantaleo was an All-American for Michigan during his collegiate career.

In the semifinals, Scott, who was competing for the Brunson Utah Valley Regional Training Center, Virginia Tech NCAA Champion Caleb Henson, who defeated Scott 10-4 to advance to the finals on Friday, where he'll face 3-time NCAA Champion and Olympian Zain Retherford.

In the consolation semifinals, Scott led 10-10 by criteria over Iowa wrestler Jordan Williams before a last-second exposure gave Williams the win (13-10) and a spot in the third-place match. Against Williams, Scott trailed 8-3 with 80 seconds left before a pair of step-out points and a 4-point move in a span of 30 seconds gave him a 9-8 lead.
