Utah Valley falls at No. 24 BYU

PROVO, Utah – No. 24 Brigham Young University defeated Utah Valley, 3-0 (25-11, 25-9, 25-16), on Tuesday night at Smith Fieldhouse. BYU (6-1) was led by Preseason All-Big 12 selection Claire Little Chambers, who paced the Cougars with nine kills. As a team, BYU hit .520. Brielle Rueckert led UVU (2-8) with seven kills while hitting .583 in the match.
 
The Cougars took the opening set after hitting .444 behind three kills each from Claire Little Chambers and Kylie Buttars. Brielle Rueckert led the Wolverines with three kills in the opening set. The Wolverines took an early 1-0 lead after a block assist from Rueckert and Evalyn Medaris, then went on a 3-0 run to cut the Cougar lead to 8-6. BYU then went on a hot streak and pulled away to win the first set, 25-11.
 
BYU continued its hot streak in the second set, hitting .667 with 14 kills on 21 swings and no attack errors to set the tone and take the second set.
 
Fifth-year Maranda Woolf stepped in during the third set and finished with three kills on three swings for the Wolverines. Bree Carson recorded a kill to cut the BYU lead to 6-5 before Woolf found her groove with two kills, including one to make the deficit 13-8. UVU kept the pressure on and went on a 4-0 run, with Olivia Gloeckner recording a kill before Rueckert teamed up on a block, and a BYU attack error cut the lead to 16-12. Medaris helped keep the Wolverines in striking distance when she recorded two kills, but it wasn't enough to prevent the sweep. She finished with four kills and 19 assists in the defeat.
 
UP NEXT
The Wolverines return to action Thursday, Sept. 18, at 7 p.m. MT in Logan against Utah State before returning home for a Saturday afternoon contest against Weber State inside Lockhart Arena.
