HONOLULU—Kate Booth scored in the 89th minute to lift Utah Valley to a 1-0 shutout victory over Washington State on Thursday afternoon at the OUTRIGGER No Ka Oi at Hawai'i's Lower Campus Field.
Utah Valley improves to 2-2-1 on the season with the win, while Washington State falls to 2-3-1.
With the match still scoreless in the 89th minute, Nixan Jackson received the ball on the right side outside the box and sent a cross all the way across the field to Booth on the left side. Booth settled the ball before firing a left-footed shot past the Washington State goalkeeper and into the net for the game winner.
The goal was Booth's first of the season, while Jackson picked up her second assist of the year.
"We're excited about the result and picking up three points, and we're excited about a shutout," Utah Valley head coach Chris Lemay said. "I thought in the second half we were a lot more dynamic than we were in the first half."
Madeleine Boucher and the Wolverine defense recorded their first shutout of the season. Boucher made four saves in goal to earn the clean sheet.
Utah Valley controlled much of the match statistically, outshooting Washington State 19-6, including an 8-4 advantage in shots on goal. The Wolverines also held a 5-2 edge in corner kicks.
Booth led all players with five shots, including two on goal, while Sam Curtis added four shots with one on frame.
Despite the victory, Lemay said he wanted more from his team early in the match.
"To be very honest, I was frustrated with the way that we came out," Lemay said. "I thought that we made it a much closer game than it should have been."
The Wolverines will wrap up their two-match stay in Hawai'i on Sunday against former WAC foe New Mexico State. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. HT/5 p.m. MT. Utah Valley will then return home to UCCU Stadium to host San Diego State on Saturday, Sept. 12.
