OREM—Utah Valley senior defender Mia Owens has been named The Big West Defensive Player of the Week after helping the Wolverines post back-to-back shutouts and claim the OUTRIGGER No Ka Oi tournament title in Honolulu.
Owens anchored a Utah Valley back line that did not concede a goal in 180 minutes of action as the Wolverines defeated Washington State 1-0 on Thursday before shutting out New Mexico State 4-0 on Sunday. UVU limited its two opponents to just 11 combined shots and six shots on goal while outscoring them 5-0. Owens played all 180 minutes during the tournament and was named to the OUTRIGGER No Ka Oi All-Tournament Team.
The two victories extended Utah Valley's winning streak to three matches and improved the Wolverines to 3-2-1 on the season.
Utah Valley also nominated senior forward Kate Booth for Big West Offensive Player of the Week and freshman goalkeeper Madeleine Boucher for Rookie of the Week.
Booth was named to the OUTRIGGER No Ka Oi All-Tournament Team after scoring the game-winning goal in the 89th minute of UVU's 1-0 victory over Washington State. She finished the tournament with one goal, five shots and two shots on goal.
Boucher was named MVP of the OUTRIGGER No Ka Oi after recording consecutive clean sheets in goal. The freshman made four saves against Washington State and two against New Mexico State, finishing the tournament with six saves, a 1.000 save percentage and no goals allowed in 180 minutes.
Owens' honor is Utah Valley's first Big West women's soccer weekly award since joining the conference this season.
Utah Valley returns to UCCU Stadium on Saturday night to host San Diego State. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
