SIOUX FALLS, South Dakota – Utah Valley State hit a meager .080 in the decisive final set and Augustana College escaped with a 24-30, 30-19, 30-26, 23-30, 8-15 win over the Wolverines.
In contrast to UVSC's fifth-set struggles, Augustana hit an impressive .412 in the final set. The Vikings were ahead 8-4 in the set when the teams switched sides. The score was 10-4 before UVSC made it 10-5 and Augustana coasted in for the win.
"I felt pretty good going into the fifth set," said UVSC coach
Sam Atoa. "We just hit over .300 in winning the fourth set and seemed to have a lot of confidence and momentum. But we weren't the aggressor in the final set like we were in the fourth. We made some crucial serving errors and just played very tentative."
Augustana's Sara Larsen had a match-high 18 kills. Alina Walluer led UVSC with 16 kills.
Jenny Weed, 15, and
Kassidy Brotherson, 14, gave the Wolverines three players in double-digit kills for the match.
UVSC drops to 4-9 on the year and play Wednesday at South Dakota State. The schedule start is 6:00 p.m.
