OREM – The flu bug may have been the difference Saturday night as Utah Valley State dropped to 1-2 in dual meets this season with a 24-18 loss to visiting Western State College.
 
UVSC not only wrestled without Ryan Argyle on Saturday, but the Wolverines had to take a forfeit loss in the 125 lb class as an injury also prevented Ryan Stevens, Argyle's backup, from competing. The Mountaineers received the maximum six points for the forfeit win; the difference in the final team score.
 
Despite the misfortune, UVSC looked poised to defeat the No.5 ranked D-II squad.
 
Tanner Cowan opened the dual with a 10-2 major decision win over Tyler Lancaster in the 165 1b class. Freshman Darrin Harris then put UVSC a head 10-0 with a pin of Cameron Bretz just 2:00 minutes into their match.
 
Western State's Dillon Waggoner and Blake Wilson responded for the Mountaineers with Waggoner winning by decision, 8-4, over Ivan Bigney, and Wilson pinning UVSC's Darren Cooper at 3:08 to make the team score 10-9. Kip Cullin then won by decision, 7-4, over Cory Bastian to put the Mountaineers on top 12-10. Bastian was making his first appearance of the season for the Wolverines. He wrestled in place of Billy Green who is nursing a sore shoulder.
 
Next up was the 125 lb class where UVSC forfeited and Western State led 18-10. Erkin Tadzhimetov then won by technical fall, 17-0, for UVSC making quick work of Jeremy Gross in the first period. 
 
Western State followed with two wins by decision to extend its lead to 24-15 and clinch the dual. UVSC's Wayne Watts closed the dual with a 12-5 decision over Jack Quintana to provide the final 24-18 score.
 
The Wolverines are off until January 3 when they participate in the Lone Star Duals in Arlington, Texas. UVSC will square off against Central Florida, Harvard, Wisconsin, and Missouri Baptist in the competition.
