Wolverines Hammer Utes in Season Finale

May 12, 2004

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - Jed Jensen pitched and the Utah Valley State offense hit, in a 14-5 pummeling of the University of Utah on Wednesday at Ute Field.

Jensen pitched eight strong innings scattering nine hits while allowing just three earned runs. He struck out eight Ute batters while only walking two. Southpaw Brady Drake mopped up the final inning for the Wolverines. Jensen earned his team high sixth win of the season on the day. He finishes with a record of 6-3.

The Wolverine offense scored early and often, plating 10 runs in the first four innings, including a three run first inning, and a five run third inning.

Six UVSC hitters had multi-hit days including a 3-for-4 performance for Canyon Vance and a 3-for-6 outing for Josh Hinckley. All three of Hinckley's hits were doubles and he had three RBI. Dan Bulow went 2-for-3 with a four RBI, and a big three run round tripper in the third.

UVSC scored three runs on three hits off Ute starter John Welsh in the first inning thanks to RBI doubles by Hinckley and Todd Bateman. Bateman finished the day 2-for-3 with two RBI.

The Utes got one run back in the home half of the first when Matt Ciaramella doubled in Jared Pena, who got on with a double of his own. Utah added another run in the second to cut the Wolverine lead to 3-2.

The Wolverines five run third started on a lead off double to right center field by Vance. He moved to third on a Hinckley groundout, and Trent Perry walked. Bateman then singled to left to drive in Vance and make way for Bulow. His three run blast to dead center field broke the game open 8-2.

UVSC extended its lead to 10-2 in the fourth inning when Reno Mendenhall (2-for-3, 3 runs) scored on a Ute error and Bulow drove in Vance who singled his way on.

Utah rounded out its scoring with single runs in the fourth, seventh, and ninth innings.

Three more Wolverine runs came in the seventh on a two run double by Hinckley and a RBI single by Sam Van Dyken, who came in to replace Bateman in left field. Van Dyken had a perfect 2-for-2 day. UVSC ended its scoring parade when Joel Taylor drove in Van Dyken, who doubled with two outs in the ninth.

With the win, UVSC closes out its first NCAA Division I season with a very respectable 19-17 overall record. The Wolverines split the six game season series with the Utes, with each team winning two games each at their respectable home parks and one game on the road.
