GUNNISON, Colorado - A fall by
Matt Ripplinger in the final match of the night forced an 18-18 tie between Utah Valley State and Western State Thursday night.
"That match (Ripplinger's) was good for his confidence," said head coach Cody Sanderson. "Western State was lucky to get out of the gym with a tie."
With the Wolverines (2-9-1) trailing 18-12 going into the 133-pound match, Ripplinger scored a fall of Jonah Stewart at 4:15.
Utah Valley opened the night with victories by Clayton Wolfe (141), Brandon Meise (149) and Tanner Cowan (157) to take a 9-0 lead.
A victory by Western's Dan Roesch (165) and a forfeit tied the score at 9-9, before Ivan Bigney scored a 10-7 decision at 184 to give Utah
the lead again at 12-9.
"It's definitely a positive for us," said Sanderson. "A lot of guys are making progress and you always want improvement to be happy."
Western State ran off three straight wins to take an 18-12 lead going into the final match.
Utah Valley travels to Portland, Oregon to take on Portland State on Friday, January 28th at 8:00 pm (MST). The Wolverines snuck by the Vikings in Orem last Thursday 28-21.
