PASCO, Washington - So far the 2005 baseball season has been feast or famine for Utah Valley State after a 14-1 loss to Gonzaga Sunday afternoon. Three straight losses in week one, followed by four straight wins the following week had the Wolverines feeling good going into the weekend. But after the Bulldogs completed the three game sweep, the all or nothing streak was still alive.
"Overall we just didn't compete at the plate like we should have,"Â said UV assistant coach Nate Mathis. "We didn't make adjustments. There's really not much to it, they just out-hit and out-pitched us like crazy."
The lone run on the day came via a Kory Drew home run. After falling behind 0-2, Drew worked the count full before blasting a shot over the left field wall.
"We've got to give credit to them,"Â said Mathis. "Their pitchers came in, threw strikes and did a good job."
Utah Valley is back in action this coming weekend in Lewiston, Idaho at the Banana Belt Tournament. They will play four games in three days opening with Washington State Thursday at 1:00Â p.m. The rest of the schedule has the Wolverines playing Lewis-Clark State at 4:00Â p.m. Thursday, the University of Portland Friday at 10:00Â a.m. and a rematch with Gonzaga Saturday at 4:00Â p.m.
