Wolverines Lose Despite Strong Start From Mickolio

DAVIS, California - The Utah Valley State baseball team got a quality start from Kam Mickolio, but it went for naught Friday in Davis, California as UC Davis beat the Wolverines 7-5 on a warm Northern California afternoon.

Mickolio lasted into the 7th inning Friday, his longest outing of the season, and gave up only two earned runs. Mickolio left the game in line for the win, but the Aggies scored four runs in the bottom of the 7th to take a two-run lead which erased Mickolio from any decision.

"Kam Mickolio threw a heckuva game," said Gardner. "He was able to locate the ball pretty well where he hasn't been able to do that in the past."

The game started well for the Wolverines as they got to UC Davis pitcher Dave McKae early, scoring a run in both the first and second innings.

The Aggies scored two in the third to tie it then took the lead in the bottom of the fourth when Dan Baldini singled home Kevin James.

Canyon Vance and Trent Perry hit back-to-back singles to lead off the top of the 5th and both eventually scored giving Utah Valley a 4-3 lead.

The strangest sequence of the day came when Canyon Vance was at the plate with runners on first and third. Vance hit the ball to the 2nd baseman, but catcher-??s interference was called giving Vance 1st and Reno Mendenhall 2nd. Todd Bateman, the runner at third, was originally sent back to third but after a conference by the umpires was allowed to score giving the Wolverines a 5-3 lead. That-??s when the seventh inning rally from UC Davis came, as they scored four runs to turn the tide in their favor.

"The bottom of the 7th we gave up the runs and had the error and that inning was the big turning point," said Utah Valley State coach Steve Gardner.

Beau Giles took the loss for the Wolverines, while Eddie Gamboa threw the final four innings for the Aggies to pick up the win.

The top of the order produced for Utah Valley as Kory Drew, Mendenhall and Vance each had two hits. Designated hitter Todd Bateman was 2-3 with an RBI for Wolverines, who are now 5-11 after the loss and take a five game losing streak into tomorrow-??s 2:00pm MST start.

Brady Drake gets the call for the Wolverines. The south paw is 1-1 with a 3.74 ERA so far this season.

"Brady's gotta be sharp," said Gardner. "They've got a lot of left handed hitters so he's gotta be able to locate and throw strikes."
