Wolverines Get Complete Effort in Win Over Utes

OREM, Utah - Kevin Hashimoto had two hits and Jed Jensen picked up the win on the mound as the first two four-year seniors in Utah Valley State history helped lead the Wolverines past Utah 8-2 on Senior Night in Orem. Utah Valley got a complete team effort across the board as they pounded out 12 hits including three from Nick Connor and two each, including triples, from both Hashimoto and Canyon Vance.

Connor hit his first home fun of the year, an inside the park home run, in the third inning. But the hit was overshadowed by a scary play in which Utah leftfielder Seth Tartler went head first into the outfield wall and was knocked unconscious. Tartler had to be taken off the field by ambulance to a local hospital but there wsa good news as was released later in the evening.

Utah jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the third, but three runs each in the third and fourth by the Wolverines were more than enough to seal the victory.

"You've gotta give credit to the guys," said Utah Valley coach Steve Gardner. "Jed settled down and we got some confidence and battled back and got some runs after they scored first."

The Utes had 10 hits of their own but stranded 13 runners on the night as Utah Valley took the season series from Utah 3-to-2 and now lead the overall series 6-to-5.

Jeremy Harris picked up an RBI double in the final home at-bat of his career in the 7th inning, while Trent Perry was 1-for-4 with an RBI and pitcher Beau Giles worked the ninth in their final home games.

Gardner used four pitchers on the night, including usual starters Kyle Tash and Kam Mickolio, as the Wolverines were coming off of a nine day layoff and some regular starters needed work before heading to the Division-I Independent Invitational this weekend in Greeley, Colorado.

The Wolverines will take on the New York Institute of Technology Friday morning at 11:00am, Northern Colorado Saturday at 2:30pm and South Dakota State on Sunday at 11:00am in the three-game invitational.
