Former Wolverines Make the Difference in BYU Comeback

OREM, Utah - The BYU Cougars came from behind for the 21st time in 2005 to score 10 unanswered runs and erase a 6-0 deficit to beat Utah Valley State 10-6 on Monday night. Three former Wolverines drove in eight of the nine runs batted in for BYU, including three each by Brandon Taylor and Ben Saylor on three-run home runs to right field. Taylor had four RBI on the day and was 3-for-5 just hours after being named Collegiate Baseball's National Player of the Week.

Casey Nelson, the other Cougar who played his junior college ball at Utah Valley State, picked up one RBI for BYU.

The Wolverines looked like they had a good chance to pick up a victory after putting four runs on the board in the second inning and adding two more in the third.

In the second, the five through nine hitters for Utah Valley strung together five consecutive hits including two two-run doubles by Brad Hales and Kevin Hashimoto to put the Wolverines up 4-0.

In the bottom of the third, Eli Slesk doubled to lead off the inning, knocking BYU starter James Platt out of the game. Dan Bulow then welcomed Justin Su'a to the game by hitting the first pitch over the right field wall for his 15th home run of the season and gave Utah Valley State a 6-0 lead.

After that it was all BYU as Taylor's three run blast came in the top of the fourth and Saylor's shot came with two out in the fifth. Taylor's home run was his 18th of the year. The Cougars added two insurance runs in the top of the ninth for the final 10-6 count.

Su'a picked up the win for BYU, while Joshua Barrett threw the final three innings to pick up the save. The two Cougar pitchers combined for seven innings of work and allowed only one earned run on four hits while striking out eight Wolverines.

"It's like we stopped doing what we were doing," said an upset coach Steve Gardner after the game. "We needed to be patient and we weren't."

"I thought we showed a lot of character," said BYU coach Vance Law. "Su'a and Barrett we're the differences in the ballgame."

The loss puts the Wolverines at 14-33 while BYU improves to 32-13-1 as they prepare for a weekend series with New Mexico. The Cougars won the first season series between Utah Valley and BYU 4-1 as the two schools began a new rivalry.

"It's good to have two wonderful ballparks so close together," said Law. "And Utah Valley is going to continue to improve so this should be a fairly significant rivalry in the future."

The Wolverines continue their tough week of play as they travel to Salt Lake City tomorrow to take on the red-hot Utes at 2:00pm on Ute Field. The team will travel to Tempe, Arizona on Wednesday to take on #17 Arizona State followed by a weekend series at #8 Arizona in Tucson.
