OREM, Utah – Freshman
Camie Manwill and JC transfer
Brooke Adams both had career-high kills to help lead Utah Valley State past in-state rival Weber State in volleyball action, 27-30, 30-27, 30-25, 30-22, on Tuesday night in the Activity Center.
Manwill finished with 21 kills, and Adams had a solid 13 tallies. Oh and by the way,
Lacee Koelliker tied a school record with 65 assists, while
Maegan Hoyt on the defensive end put up a season-high 28 digs. Hoyt's dig total is ranked second in school history, four behind her own school record of 33. It was Utah Valley's first ever win over an in-state school.
"They played with a lot of heart and a lot of passion and wanted to win," said head coach
Sam Atoa. "Camie played a great match, and made some needed adjustments after game one. I sure like the effort Brooke brought, just banging balls in the middle to help us take the lead or maintain leads throughout the match. Jessica was great finishing with 19 kills, and hitting .586."
Endres' hitting clip was a career-high for her as well.
Game one was back-and-forth most of the way until Weber took a five point lead at 18-13 to force a Wolverine timeout. Utah Valley regrouped and scored the next four points cutting the lead to one at 18-17. The Wolverines would eventually tie the set at 20-20. The Wildcats had late kills from Chelsea Bair that helped them get to 29-27, and then close the game out at 30-27.
Jessica Endres had 6 kills in the game for Utah Valley.
The Wolverines took advantage of six
Brooke Adams kills in game two to take a late 25-22 lead. Utah Valley would finish off the Wildcats on a Manwill smash and even up the match at one game apiece winning the second set 30-27.
Pivotal game three went the Wovlerines' way with two big blasts coming from
Stephanie McFarland. One of them was a kill, followed by a huge block to give UV a 27-23 lead. Utah Valley would finish the game in fitting fashion on two back-to-back kills by Manwill and Endres.
In game four the wind was taken out of the Wildcats early as the Wolverines set the tone scoring the first eight points. WSU could never recover cutting the Wolverine lead to four two different times, but never getting closer than that. Utah Valley raced to a 30-22 win, and secured the match.
"Utah Valley was definitely the better team tonight," said Weber head coach Al Givens. "Utah Valley's a good team."
The Wolverines improve to 5-6 on the season and the Wildcats fall to 7-8. Utah Valley will be on the road this weekend to take on fellow Independents North and South Dakota State on Friday and Saturday. The Wolverines play NDSU on Friday, September 30th at 6:00 pm (MST), and turn around the next night to play SDSU at 6:00 pm (MST). Complete game summaries and stats can be found onÂ
