OREM, Utah - Adam Openshaw's two-out RBI single in the bottom of the eighth scored
Eli Slesk helping Utah Valley State to a 5-4 win over Utah on Saturday afternoon in Orem.
The Wolverines carried a 4-3 lead into the top of the eighth but Utah tied it up after a sacrifice fly by Josh Bell scored John Welsh.
Then in the bottom of the inning, Slesk singled up the middle with one out and, after
Chris Benson flew out, stole second.
Utah then intentionally walked
Canyon Vance, setting up the at-bat by Openshaw who singled through the right side to score Slesk.
"It was a really important win for us to come back after that rough day (yesterday) and get a victory," said Slesk.
Despite not factoring into the decision,
Kam Mickolio pitched well for Utah Valley State, lasting six innings and allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits while striking out three.
"I just tried to keep the ball down," said Mickolio, who has won three out of his last four decisions. "I think (this win) means a lot. Just trying to lift everyone's spirits again. It's good for all of us."
Kyle Beecher (1-1) threw three innings of relief and allowed one run on two hits, picking up the win for Utah Valley while Brad DeVore (3-2) gave up the go ahead run in the eighth and suffered the loss.
Utah Valley State got on the board in the bottom of the second inning when
Canyon Vance lined a home run over the left field wall for his second round tripper of the year.
After the Utes took a 2-1 lead with two runs in the fifth, the Wolverines answered with a three-run fifth to take a 4-2 lead on runs batted in by
Kade Boyer,
Jason Zundel and
Keiki Albino.
Corey Shimada got Utah within a run at 4-3 with a two-out RBI single that scored Joe Mozeleski in the sixth.
Utah out-hit Utah Valley 6-5 as neither team had a player with more than one hit.
Up next for the Wolverines is a home match up on Tuesday at 7pm against neighbor BYU before a three-game series beginning Friday at 7pm against fellow NCAA Independent Northern Colorado.
