Wolverines Edged by Gonzaga

March 2, 2007

Lewiston, Idaho - Gonzaga scored two times in the bottom of the eighth inning to edge Utah Valley State 6-5 on Friday at the Banana Belt Tournament in Lewiston, Idaho.

The Wolverines took a 5-4 lead in the top of the eighth on an RBI single form Austin Heaps that scored Dan Bulow, but the Bulldogs tied it on an RBI single from Darin Holcomb.

Gonzaga took the lead for good when Utah Valley couldn't complete a double play and Ryan Wiegand reached on a fielder's choice, driving in Aaron McGuinness.

The Wolverines had 10 hits on the day, including three from Ryan Jones and two from Dick Bargewell. Dan Bulow drove in two on the day for UV.

The Bulldogs finished with 13 hits, eight of which were doubles, using a balanced attack with five hitters picking up two hits.

Marcus Moore surrendered the two runs in the eighth for Utah Valley and suffered the loss, dropping his record to 1-1.

Freshman Ryan Chadwick was solid out of the bullpen for the Wolverines, striking out four in 3.2 innings of work while not allowing a run.

Utah Valley will be back in action on Saturday at 11am MT against Air Force before wrapping up the tournament on Sunday against Southern Utah at Noon.
