OREM, Utah - Chicago State used a big second half run to earn a 66-64 win over Utah Valley on Monday night in a game that had to be moved to Timpanogos High School due to a power outage on the UV campus.
The Wolverines (13-7), who have now lost four straight, led 48-28 with 16:38 left before the Cougars (9-11) went on a 35-10 run over the next 13 minutes to take a 63-58 lead with 3:43 to go.
Robyn Fairbanks, who finished with game highs of 29 points and 15 rebounds, brought Utah Valley within one, 65-64, with 20 seconds left but that's as close as the Wolverines would come.
Chicago State held UV to just 16 points over the final 16-plus minutes, with Fairbanks virtually the only offense that the Wolverines could muster.
The junior center scored 10 of the final 16 UV points, hitting 3-of-4 from the field and 4-of-4 from the free-throw line. Overall, Fairbanks was 10-of-17 from the field while also picking up three steals.
Sandy Marvin had 18 points and notched her 1,000th career point with 5:00 minutes remaining in the first half on a three-pointer. Marvin also had seven rebounds while Jordyn Bowen added seven boards.
Jasmin Dixon had 20 points, nine rebounds and 7 steals to lead CSU while Courtney Waldon had a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Second half turnovers were a major culprit in losing the 20-point lead as UV turned it over 12 times over a 12 minute span. Overall, the Wolverines turned it over 22 times leading to 28 points for the Cougars.
After carrying a 10-point lead into half time, Utah Valley jumped out quickly in the second half on back-to-back three-pointers from Fairbanks and Marvin to go on a 14-4 run, building their lead to that 48-28 advantage.
Monday's loss is tecnically Utah Valley's first home loss of the season, although the Wolverines are still 9-0 in games played inside their usual home, The McKay Center.
UV will be off until next Thursday when they host NJIT at 7:05pm MT. The Wolverines will have a shot at avenging Monday's loss when they play at Chicago State on February 23rd.
