SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Utah Valley Baseball dropped a doubleheader at Santa Clara to open the baseball season, 12-2 and 7-2, on Friday in Northern California.
The Wolverines will play another doubleheader on Saturday, this time at Pac-10 Cal beginning at 11am MT.
Marcus Moore took the loss in the opening game while freshman Peter Sundwall suffered the defeat in the second game. Game two starter Bryan Smith had a solid day, giving up two runs on three hits and striking out five in six innings of work.
Ryan Jones and Jace Brinkerhoff both totaled three hits on the day to lead Utah Valley. Both players had two hits in the opener.
In the second game, Utah Valley was hitless until the top of the 7th, when Jones singled and Brinkerhoff followed with a double. Adam Openshaw drove in Jones on a sacrifice fly to center before Josh Hinckley doubled home Brinkerhoff to tie the game at two.
After Sundwall retired SCU in order in the seventh, the Broncos plated five runs in the bottom of the eighth for the final 7-2 tally.
Saturday's scheduled starters for Utah Valley are Aaron Brady and Dan Christensen.
