SEATTLE, Wash. - Three Portland pitchers combined to shutout Utah Valley 2-0 in the first of two Friday games for the Wolverines in Seattle. UV (4-14-1) will play Washington at 6pm MT in its second game of the day.
The Pilots (14-8) started Ari Ronick, who lasted seven innings and gave up three hits while striking out four before Matthew Lange and Scott Burris came on in relief to close out the Wolverines. Ronick improved to 2-2 on the year while Burris earned his second save after retiring the final four batters.
Scott Croshaw had three hits to lead the Wolverines while Kai Hatch had the only other hit, a bunt single in the second inning.
Portland scored in the first on a sacrifice fly by Cort Carpenter to take a 1-0 lead. The Pilots added a run in the fifth when Paul Crowder singled to second base and Eric Brown scored after obstruction was called on catcher Brock Sargent in a play at the plate.
With the win, Portland took the season series 2-0 over Utah Valley. The Pilots edged UV 4-3 on March 6th in Davis, California at the River City Classic.
