SACRAMENTO - For the second straight day Utah Valley got a strong pitching performance as Aaron Brady went eight innings and the Wolverines won 7-2 over Sacramento State at the River City Classic.
Brady gave up two runs on five hits while striking out six to earn his first win on the mound for Utah Valley (3-8-1) while Jace Brinkerhoff had three hits and drove in three runs for UV.
The Wolverines wasted little time in getting on the board. Ryan Jones walked and moved up to second on a wild pitch before Brinkerhoff drove him in with a single. Cole Anderson made it 2-0 UV when his second inning single scored Kevin Arendse, who led off the inning with a base hit to center.
Gabe Jacobo got the Hornets (2-7) on the board in the bottom of the second with a home run, but that was answered with two runs in the third by the Wolverines. Adam Openshaw knocked a base hit to right to score Brinkerhoff and Scott Croshaw hit a sacrifice fly to plate Kai Hatch.
Croshaw drove in his second run of the game in the fifth when he singled home Hatch, who went 2-for-5 and scored two runs batting in the clean up spot. Brinkerhoff made it 7-1 in the sixth when his triple to left scored AJ Palmer and Jones.
Utah Valley totaled 13 hits on the day while Sac State finished with seven. Jacobo had two hits on the day for the Hornets and also drove in both runs.
The Wolverines wrap up the River City Classic on Sunday at 11am MT against San Jose State.
