BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Utah Valley fell just two innings short of sweeping a double header against Cal-State Bakersfield as the Wolverines won game one 9-4 before falling 7-4 in game two.
"Overall we played pretty well," UV head coach Todd Fairbourne said. "I'm disappointed that we couldn't close the door on the second game. It's a game I felt we really should have won."
The Wolverines were led by Alli Bramwell who went 2-for-3 from the plate in each game and got on base three times in both contests. Kylee Steadman drove in three runs for the Wolverines in the first game.
Utah Valley jumped to a 4-0 lead in the first game as the Wolverines sent nine batters to the plate in the first inning. Meghan Woodworth started the game with a double, the only UV player to get an extra-base hit in the opening frame. Each of the first four Wolverines to the plate scored in the inning. Heidi Stocks, Jessica Anderson and Steadman each had RBI in the inning.
Utah Valley extended its lead in the third when Stocks and Anderson got back-to-back singles to start the inning and scored on a two-run triple from Steadman. Steadman scored on a RBI single from Lauren Augino.
After the Roadrunners scored three unanswered runs in the third and fourth innings highlighted by a home run to cut UV's lead to 7-3, the Wolvereines responded with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth. Cherylyn McGraw smoked a two-out double to plate Augino and Bramwell who each reached on walks to put the Wolverines ahead 9-3. CSUB only managed one run in the final three innings.
In the second game, UV got on the board first again jumping to a 3-0 lead with all three runs coming in the top of the second. Anderson and Steadman picked up a pair of singles to start the inning. Samantha Telarroja picked up a RBI single on a single up the middle and Augino had a run-scoring ground out for the Wolverines in the inning.
The runners answered with a run of their own in the secon, scoring on a RBI error to third base. CSUB tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the fourth with a pair of runs.
Woodworth used her speed to help UV get a run and the lead back in the fifth as she bunted and later scored on a sacrifice fly from McGraw.
With UV leading 4-3 going into the bottom of the fifth, the Roadrunnes scored four in the frame to take a decisive 7-4 lead. UV gave away most of the runs in the inning as Bakersfield had a batter strike out and take first on a passed ball and took advantage of a UV error to score four unearned runs.
The same two teams will play a double header tomorrow starting at 11 a.m. (MT)
