Wolverines Shutout at No. 19 Arizona

May 10, 2008

TUCSON, Arizona - Utah Valley fell for the second straight day at No. 19 Arizona as two Wildcat pitchers combined to toss a three-hit shutout in a 7-0 game on Saturday night.

Starter David Coulon (7-3) allowed just three scattered hits, all singles, and Daniel Schlereth was perfect over the final two innings for Arizona, who moved to 33-15 on the year.

Schlereth, the son of former All-Pro NFL star Mark Schlereth, has now pitched three perfect innings in the series and struck out five. Through the first two games in the series, three UA relievers have allowed just one hit over six innings while striking out 10 hitters.

Dick Bargewell, Jake Rickenbach and Kai Hatch were the only Wolverines with hits on the day as UV fell to 14-33-1 after being shutout for the fourth time this season.

It's the seventh time this year that Arizona has shutout its opponent and the second time it has blanked Utah Valley in seven games all-time.

Jon Gaston homered for the second straight day, hitting his 10th of the year in the sixth inning. Diallo Fon hit his third home run of the year and seventh of the series for the Wildcats in the seventh.

Gaston, T.J. Steele and Brad Glenn each had two hits to lead Arizona.

The series finale is Sunday at noon local time in Tucson with Bryan Smith set to start on the mound for the Wolverines.
