No. 9 Cowboys Edge Wolverines to Open Twinbill

May 3, 2008

STILLWATER, Oklahoma - After Utah Valley took an early three-run lead, No. 9 Oklahoma State scored the final five runs of the game to win the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday 6-3. The win for the Cowboys (34-11) made it 11 straight while the Wolverines fell to 12-30-1 with the loss.

After OSU took a 1-0 lead in with an RBI single by Dean Green in the bottom of the first, Utah Valley had a three-run third to take their first lead of the series.

After Jace Brinkerhoff singled home Jake Rickenbach for the first run of the game, Brinkerhoff broke from first early and got caught in a rundown which allowed Cole Anderson to break from third and score. Brinkerhoff was safe at second on the play and then came home to score the third run on a two-out double by Scott Croshaw.

Croshaw, Brinkerhoff and Anderson all had two hits each to lead the Wolverines. Anderson also had two stolen bases on the day.

Rebel Ridling led off the fourth with his 12th home run of the year and second of the series to get Oklahoma State within one. Jordy Mercer then tied the game on a sacrifice fly that scored Luis Flores.

The Cowboys took the lead with a two-run fifth with Thomas Belza driving home what ended up as the winning run. Matt Hague added insurance with his seventh home run, a solo shot to left, in the bottom of the sixth.

Aaron Brady (2-6) got the loss after going the distance for the Wolverines while Tyler Lyons (8-2) got the win. Matt Peck earned his fourth save after getting the last four outs of the game.

The second game of the twinbill is scheduled for approximately 4 p.m. Central Time.
