UVU vs. Mesa State - Results
UVU vs. CSU-Pueblo - Results
GUNNISON, Colo. - Utah Valley University's wrestling team went an impressive 3-0 on Saturday at the 19th annual Tracy Borah Duals as the Wolverines (6-2) downed Mesa State 40-6, CSU-Pueblo 38-3, and host-school No. 7 (Div. II) Western State 28-12.
Last season UVU went 2-2 overall at the Borah Duals but this season the Wolverines are showing how the program is progressing forward as UVU controlled the event.
"It was a dominating performance today," UVU head wrestling coach Greg Williams said. "It means a lot to the team and says a lot for our program for us to come out and perform like we did. The team was aggressive and controlled all three duals convincingly."
Earlier this season UVU beat Western State by one-point in a very close 20-19 matchup on neutral territory in St. George, Utah. But today the Wolverines won the individual matchups 7-3, including giving up a forfeit at heavyweight, against a very good Division-II squad. Utah Valley freshman Adam Fager (197) and sophomore Flint Ray (133) were able to make some adjustments against their respective Western State opponents that they fell to earlier in the season and come back and beat them on Saturday. Fager beat his opponent, the No. 2 ranked grappler in D-II, Donovan McMahill 7-4, and Ray beat the No. 6 ranked man in D-II, Marques Bravo 5-4.
UVU sophomore Benjamin Kjar (125) stayed true to his reputation as he went 3-0 on the day with two wins by fall and the other an 11-1 major decision. Other Wolverines that went undefeated on the day include sophomore Flint Ray 3-0, junior Jeffrey Newby (141) 3-0, sophomore Jeb Clark (165) 3-0, sophomore Casen Eldredge (184) 3-0 including two victories by fall, freshman Adam Fager 3-0, and sophomore Diego Avalon (HWT) 2-0. The impressive thing for Avalon is that he normally competes at 184-pounds but was able to step-up for the Wolverines and perform well at heavyweight and beat his two opponents on the day that each outweighed him by over 50 pounds.
Overall UVU grapplers tallied an impressive 25-5 win/loss record, including six victories via fall. Complete results from the Tracy Borah Duals can be seen by clicking on the links at the top of this page.
Next up for Utah Valley they will come home to host their first conference dual matchup of the season as the Wolverines will welcome fellow Western Wrestling Conference foe Northern Colorado to the Shurian Family Activity Center Saturday, Jan. 31 at 7 p.m.
