CEDAR CITY, Utah - A 1-0 game through six quickly turned into a blowout as Southern Utah scored seven runs in the seventh inning and four more in the eighth for a 12-0 win over Utah Valley on Friday afternoon.
The Wolverines (2-3) had just five hits on the day, all singles, led by a 3-for-3 afternoon from freshman Goose Kallunki. Chris Benson was 1-for-3 and extended his hitting streak to 22 games. Jake Rickenbach was the only other UVU player with a hit.
The T-Birds (3-3) finished with 19 hits, 12 of which came in the seventh and eighth. SUU had 10 extra base hits including five home runs. Nick Freitas and Tyler Hogge each had two along with four runs batted in and Bucky Aona had the other homer.
Brock Sargent suffered the defeat after giving up just one run on seven hits in five-plus innings of work. Steve Johnson improve to 2-0 with the five-hit shutout.
The final game of the series will take place Saturday at 2 p.m. Kole Mickolio will make his first college start for the Wolverines while Kyle Melling is scheduled to throw for Southern Utah.
