OLD WESTBURY, New York - Kyle Beecher didn't allow an earned run over seven innings and Cole McWhorter homered and doubled twice as Utah Valley ran past NYIT 14-3 to open a four-game Great West Conference series on Friday. The win for the Wolverines (26-15, 16-1) sets a new school record for wins in a season.
"It was giant for us to start off the series with a good win because they're (NYIT) and good team," said UVU head coach Eric Madsen. "Kyle Beecher pitched extremely well and we did a fairly good job at the plate."
Jason Zundel had three hits as well for Utah Valley while McWhorter drove in three runs on the day. Chris Benson hit his team-leading 10th home run of the season in the first inning when the Wolverines jumped out to a 3-0 lead.
Utah Valley stuck NYIT starter Preston Wasmund with the loss, dropping him to 5-2, after picking up seven runs on seven hits in five innings.
Beecher moved to 2-2 after an unearned run on four hits while striking out two.
The series continues with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. ET/11 a.m. MT.
