POCATELLO, Idaho -- Utah Valley University athletes Zandrea Nelson, Aaron Best and Tiera Zaugg-Hansen set new school records Saturday at the Snake River Open hosted by Idaho State University.

Nelson's new mark came in the 400 meters at 56.88 seconds, which was good for second place. Best, who finished sixth Saturday, and Zaugg-Hansen set new marks in the shot put (50-feet, 8-inches) and pentathlon (3,487 points), respectively. Both broke records they previously held.

"We had some really good performances," UVU track coach Scott Houle said. "It was another good step for us. The kids are stepping up and showing they can run at this level."

For the year, the Wolverines have set a total of five new school records.

Last week at the opening indoor meet of the season at BYU, Olivia Kyere-Boateng set a new record in the 300 meters with the time of 40.20, while Best set a new standard in the shot put with the mark of 50-3½, but that record stood for only a week.

Also last week, Zaugg-Hansen, who participated unattached, won the pentathlon at the BYU Invitational with 3,265 points. Zaugg-Hansen's mark Saturday was 213 points better than the former school record.

In addition to the school records, Houle pointed out that Becky Reeves throw of 46-8¼ in the weight throw set a new personal record by five feet. He also noted that Brooke Hodson had a great race in the mile run with the time of 5:16.38, which was good for 10th place.

In other notable performances Saturday: Amanda Morse-Ballard (7.76) and Kyere-Boateng (7.82) finished second and fifth, respectively in the 60 meters; the duo then swapped spots in the 200 meters with times of 25.14 and 25.34; Allison Holyoak finished second in the pole vault (11-11¾); Cory Pierson and Drew Clarke finished third and fourth, respectively, in the 60 meters with times of 8.67 and 8.83 and Dean Swimmer placed fourth in the long jump with at 22-6¼.

The Wolverines are back in action next Saturday at the Boise State Invitational.
