Schmalhaus Wins the 2011 UVU Open

2011 UVU Open Results

OREM, Utah -- Utah Valley sophomore Monte Schmalhaus led the Wolverine wrestling team Saturday in Orem, as he won 174-pound title at the 2011 UVU Open. Four other Wolverine wrestlers placed in the top four at the open tournament hosted by UVU that featured over 100 wrestlers from a number of schools around the west.

Schmalhaus finished a perfect 3-0 on the day to lead the 11 UVU wrestlers that competed at the tournament, while freshman Colby Christensen finished second at 125, freshman Trevor Rupp placed third at 197 and freshman Derek Malan (133) and sophomore Logan Wilson (141) both placed fourth.

En route to Schmalhaus' title he defeated Northern Colorado's Cody McAninch 6-0, Mesa State's Zac Slotten 2-0 and Mesa State's Jake Goddard by the same 2-0 score in the title bout.

Behind Schmalhaus, Christensen put up a 2-1 record for his placement, while Rupp went 3-1, Malan 3-2 and Wilson 3-2.

UVU redshirt freshman Avery Garner was also in action and finished with a 3-2 record at 149-pounds as did freshman Phillip Sorensen at 197. Sophomore 157-pounder Richard Winger and freshman 141-pounder Sam Mecham both came away with a 2-2 clips.

The Wolverines (1-0, 1-0 WWC) will be back in dual action next Saturday, Jan. 15, when they head to Arlington, Texas to take part in the Lone Star Duals. There, UVU will square off against No. 16 Nebraska, The Citadel and Appalachian State.
