Baseball Drops 3-1 Series Opener at Washington State

March 11, 2011

PULLMAN, Washington - Utah Valley dropped the opening game of a three-game set at Pac-10 Washington State, 3-1 on Friday at Bailey-Brayton Field.

Austin Haws had two hits for the Wolverines (3-8) but WSU starter Adam Conley pitched eight innings and struck out nine, giving up just one unearned run on four hits.

"We hung in there and made some nice defensive plays but we've got to start hitting," said head coach Eric Madsen.

Jeremy Gendlek pitched well in relief for Utah Valley, throwing six innings and allowing just one run on five hits with three strikeouts.

The Cougars (8-3) scored twice in the first and led until the seventh when Billy Burgess was hit by a pitch and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Kai Hatch.

Conley moved to 4-0 with the win while Blake Krahenbuhl took the loss and dropped to 2-1. Chris Benson and Jason Zundel had the other hits for the Wolverines.

The series will continue on Saturday at 3 p.m. MT.
