Wolverines Drop Finale at Washington State

March 13, 2011

PULLMAN, Washington -- Utah Valley struggled in its final road contest before Thursday's home opener, falling 16-2 at Pac-10 Washington State on Sunday afternoon.

The Cougars (9-4) jumped out to a big early lead and coasted to the win in the series finale to secure the three-game sweep.

The Wolverines (3-10) will return to Orem for their home opener on Thursday at 6 p.m. against in-state rival Southern Utah. The teams will also play Friday at 6 p.m. and Saturday at 1 p.m. at Brent Brown Ballpark.

Utah Valley was out-hit 21-7 and trailed 9-0 after two innings following a six-run second by WSU. The Wolverines got single runs in the seventh and eighth innings, the second coming on a solo home run from Chris Benson.

Goose Kallunki had two hits for UVU and Cole McWhorter had a pinch-hit RBI single in the seventh to account for the other run.
