Wolverines Notch Fifth Shutout of the Year in Great West Win

April 21, 2011

OREM, Utah - For the third time in his last four starts, Jeremy Gendlek helped lead Utah Valley to a shutout of its opponent, opening a four-game Great West Conference series against Chicago State with a 10-0 win in seven innings.

It's the sixth straight win for the Wolverines (13-17, 5-0), who ended the game early via the 10-run rule.

For Gendlek (3-3), the junior right-hander lowered his league-leading ERA to 2.17 while extending his scoreless innings streak to 17.

"We did a pretty good job all around today," said head coach Eric Madsen. "We played good defense and Jeremy's done that all year. So much of our success is dictated by our pitching and defense and that was a pretty gutty performance by Jeremy."

The Wolverines got a 3-for-3 day from Jason Zundel, who also drove in two runs, and two hits each from Kirk Doxey, Chris Benson and Kai Hatch. Billy Burgess also drove in a pair of runs as UVU extended its Great West winning streak to 15.

Burgess drove in Doxey - who doubled to start the inning - to get the Wolverines on the board in the first inning.

Utah Valley would score another in the second before extending the lead to 6-0 with a four-run third. Benson and Alex Exon both doubled and scored in the inning.

The Wolverines added four more in the sixth to take the 10-run lead and Ryan Chadwick pitched a scoreless seventh to end the game early. The series will continue with a doubleheader on Friday beginning at 4 p.m. MT.
