Two-Out Runs Costly as Wolverines Fall to Seattle

May 4, 2011

OREM, Utah - Utah Valley dropped its final non-conference home game of the year, 14-8, to Seattle on Wednesday at Brent Brown Ballpark. The Wolverines (19-20) begin a four-game Great West Conference series on Friday at Texas-Pan American and start the weekend in first place with an 11-1 mark in conference.

Chris Benson homered for UVU and Cole McWhorter finished with three hits but two-out rallies by the Redhawks (18-21) doomed UVU all night. Seattle scored all 14 of its runs with two outs including five runs each in both the sixth and ninth after there were two outs and nobody on.

The Wolverines trailed 3-1 before a three-run fifth gave them a brief lead. Jason Zundel doubled to lead off and scored on a base hit by Kirk Doxey. After McWhorter sacrificed Doxey to second, Benson hit his fourth home run of the year, giving Utah Valley a 4-3 lead.

In the top of the sixth, Seattle had eight consecutive hitters reach to score five times. The big blow came on a bases-loaded, three-run double by Trent Oleszczuk.

Trailing 8-4, the Wolverines scored twice in the seventh, on a ground-out by Austin Heaps and a two-out line drive to center by Goose Kallunki, to cut the lead in half.

Seattle would add on though, getting one run in eighth before pulling away with the five-run ninth. Josh Kalalau hit a two-run home run as part of the inning.

Brandon Kizer (6-4) got the win after going six-plus for the Redhawks while Ryan Chadwick (3-2) took the loss.

Friday's opener at Texas-Pan American is scheduled for 5 p.m. MT/6 p.m. CT from Edinburg Baseball Stadium. The last time Utah Valley played in Edinburg, the Wolverines won the Great West Tournament Championship in 10 innings over Northern Colorado.
