RENO, Nevada -- Utah Valley University dropped the second game of a three-game set at the University of Nevada, 9-1, on Saturday at Peccole Park.
Nevada (5-1) got its second straight strong performance from a starting pitcher in the series, with freshman Tyler Wells allowing just two hits in 6.1 scoreless innings to pick up his first win.
Wells kept the Wolverines (1-5) hitless until the fifth when Goose Kallunki reached on an infield single. Freshman Jordy Hart led off the sixth with his first career hit, just the second off of Wells, who walked five but was aided by three double plays.
The lone run for Utah Valley came in the ninth after Sean Moysh led off with a double and later scored on sac-fly by Kallunki.
Garrett Yrigoyen threw 1.2 hitless innings and Colby Blueberg pitched the ninth as the two combined with Wells to limit the Wolverines to just three hits on the day.
The Wolfpack scored in the first with Kyle Hunt doing it all on his own. Hunt singled, stole second, stole third and then scored on a rare steal of home. Nevada picked up four in the third with the big blow a three-run home run from Brooks Klein. Klein finished with four RBIs on the day. Austin Byler had three hits to lead Nevada.
The Wolverines will try to salvage the final game of the series on Sunday with first pitch set for 2 p.m. MT/1 p.m. PT.
