OREM, Utah -- A first half penalty kick was the difference as Utah Valley University suffered its first home defeat of the season, 1-0, to UNLV on a cold and windy Sunday at Clyde Field. Salvador Bernal scored his seventh goal of the season, converting on the PK after a foul was whistled at the top of the 18 against the Wolverines. The loss drops UVU to 5-4-1 overall and 1-1-1 in the WAC while the Rebels remain perfect in league play at 3-0-0 and 9-2-1 overall.
"UNLV is a good team, there's no question," said UVU head coach
Greg Maas. "But we've got to be a little bit sharper in our movement off the ball, in our ability to combine. We showed a little bit of our youthfulness today in trying to solve problems individually and that is something we need to work on in the training grounds this week and we'll get better at it."
Bernal's PK game in the 34th minute in a half that had UNLV playing with a strong wind at its back. The conditions didn't allow Utah Valley to muster much in the way of offense in the half, with the Rebels holding an 8-1 advantage in shots including 5-0 on goal. After switching direction at the half, the Wolverines had the offensive edge, outshooting UNLV 6-2 overall and 4-1 on goal.
Utah Valley had a few chances late, with the last coming in the final minute on a shot from
Karson Payton that was deflected by UNLV goalkeeper Ryan Harding four his fourth and final save, preserving the shutout and win. The Wolverines had been unbeaten in their first five matches at home until Sunday.
UVU will now hit the road for its next three matches including a contest at Seattle University on Saturday, Oct 18 at 7 p.m. PT/8 p.m. MT. UVU and Seattle played to a 1-1 draw in the WAC opener for both teams on Oct. 4 in Orem.
