StatBroadcastOREM, Utah -- The Utah Valley University men's soccer team closes out its inaugural home schedule this weekend with a pair of key WAC contests at Clyde Field. The Wolverines host Incarnate Word on Friday at 4 p.m. MT and Houston Baptist on Sunday at 1 p.m. MT. Both matches will air on the WAC Digital Network.
Four games remain in the regular season with eight teams vying for six spots in the 2014 WAC Tournament in Seattle. Seven teams are separated by just four points in the standings, representing the teams in third thru ninth place entering the weekend.
Utah Valley split two road matches last week, topping Air Force 2-1 before a 1-0 defeat at Kansas City. Both matches featured late goals with
Karson Payton answering an 86th-minute equalizer by the Falcons with the game-winner less than 40 seconds later. In the loss to UMKC, the Kangaroos scored the game's only goal in the 88th minute to stun the Wolverines.
"After three tough matches on the road, the boys are looking forward to returning to Clyde Field and our 12th Wolverines," said UVU head coach
Greg Maas. "Not only is it our final two home matches, but both have serious implications in the WAC standings."
UVU has just one senior on this year's roster in defender
Cameron Kidwell, who will be honored prior to Friday's match against the Cardinals. Kidwell transferred from Towson after it discountinued its men's soccer program last year.
"It will be an honor to recognize Cameron on Senior Night. His leadership has been vital to our growth as a new team, and I know our players will respond accordingly on his behalf," Maas said.
Although its not eligible for postseason play due to reclassification rules, Incarnate Word is off to an good start in the WAC, with a 5-1-0 mark in league play and a 6-7-0 record overall. The Cardinals have four players who have scored at least four goals on the season. Like UIW, Houston Baptist is a WAC affiliate in men's soccer. The Huskies enter a Friday match at Seattle at 2-8-2 overall and 1-5-0 in the WAC.
The Wolverines will wrap up their first regular season with road contests at Bakersfield (Nov. 7) and at San Jose State (Nov. 9). The WAC Tournament is slated to begin on Thursday, Nov. 13 in Seattle.
