Wrestling continues dual slate in Arizona this weekend

UVU will face Arizona State on Friday and Grand Canyon on Saturday.

Match Notes  | Live Video vs. ASU  |  Live Video vs. GCU

OREM, Utah – Fresh off of a pair of duals in Boise, Idaho, last week, the Utah Valley University wrestling team will continue its dual slate in Arizona this weekend. The Wolverines will face off against Arizona State in Tempe on Friday night before taking on Grand Canyon in Phoenix on Saturday.

Both duals will begin at 7 p.m. MT and live video will be available for each contest.

UVU (0-2, 0-0 WWC) dropped both dual meets to No. 16 Iowa State and Boise State last week. After winning just one of the 10 bouts against the ranked Cyclones to fall by a score of 39-4, the Wolverines responded by winning six of the 10 against the Broncos. Despite winning more matches than BSU, UVU dropped the dual by a mere point (19-18) because Boise State recorded seven bonus points in the contest with two pins and a major decision.

In the nightcap against the Broncos, UVU found itself trailing by a score of 19-9 but rallied to win the final three contests to drop the contest by just a point.

Junior 125-pounder Chasen Tolbert led Utah Valley on the day, as he was the lone Wolverine to record two victories. Tolbert began the tri-dual meet with a 9-0 major decision over Iowa State's Kyle Larson. He then followed it up with an 8-2 decision over BSU's Carson Kuhn in the final match of the dual. With the pair of wins, Tolbert now leads UVU with a 6-1 overall record and a 2-0 start in dual action.

Juniors Jade Rauser (133 pounds) and Derek Thomas (197) are next for Utah Valley as they each hold identical 5-2 win-loss records. Rauser and Thomas both also find themselves 1-1 in duals after splitting their two contests last weekend.

Senior heavyweight Adam Fager is the lone Wolverine to show up on the national rankings as he is currently tabbed 13th in his weight class by InterMat. After missing the past two weeks with an injury, Fager will look to return to the mat this weekend.

About Arizona State
The Sun Devils of the Pac-12 Conference are 2-1 on the season after picking up wins over Binghamton and West Virginia last week. ASU's lone loss of the season came to No. 4 Ohio State at the Journeymen Tussle in Albany, New York, last Saturday. After defeating WVU by a score of 19-13 and Binghamton 23-15, Arizona State fell to the ranked Buckeyes by 20 points (30-10).

Junior Blake Stauffer leads the way for ASU as he is currently ranked eighth at 184 pounds. Stauffer is a two-time NCAA qualifier for the Sun Devils and is off to a 7-1 start this year.

Friday's meeting will be the fifth all-time clash between UVU and ASU. Arizona State holds a 3-1 series advantage that includes an 18-16 win over Wolverines last year in Tempe.

About Grand Canyon
The Antelopes are 0-1 in duals on the season after falling to No. 11 Illinois in California last weekend. GCU is an NCAA Division I Independent in the sport of wrestling and will head to Minneapolis, Minnesota, to face No. 2 Minnesota on Thursday night prior to welcoming UVU to GCU Arena on Saturday.

Sophomore 133-pounder Godwin Nyama-Cutler leads the 'Lopes on the year with an 8-3 record. Nyama-Cutler also paced Grand Canyon at the Roadrunner Open last weekend with a fourth-place finish in his weight class.

Saturday's meeting will be the third all-time matchup between the Wolverines and 'Lopes. UVU took care of business in last season's dual meet with a 28-9 victory in Orem.

Up Next for Utah Valley
The Wolverines will be off until Dec. 5-6 when they'll head to Las Vegas, Nevada, for the annual Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational. UVU will also take part in the Reno Tournament of Champions later in the month.
