SAN JOSE, Calif. – Derek Wilcox recorded six saves and
Matt Gay's first half goal held up as Utah Valley University closed out the WAC regular season with a 1-0 shutout at San José State on Sunday afternoon.
The win gives UVU the No. 3 seed in this week's WAC Tournament and a fourth place finish overall, with 17 points, in its inaugural season. The Wolverines (9-6-2, 5-3-2) open the tournament Thursday at 7:30 p.m. PT/8:30 p.m. MT against sixth-seeded Bakersfield at Championship Field in Seattle.
"The staff couldn't be more proud of each and every player on our entire roster," UVU head coach
Greg Maas said. "The effort today was fantastic and our team's depth was evident. We're peaking at the right time and embracing the challenge of the WAC Tournament in front of us."
Gay's goal, his team-high seventh of the season, came in the 30th minute on
Karson Payton's team-best fifth assist of the year. It is also Gay's third game-winning goal of the season.

The shutout is the team's fifth of the season and second for Wilcox, who also combined with
Collin Partee in last week's blanking of Houston Baptist. The Wolverines finished with 15 shots, 12 of which came in the second half while the Spartans (6-10-2, 4-4-2) had 13 shots, getting 10 of those in the first half. UVU had two shots on goal, both from Gay, with SJSU putting six shots on frame.
Utah Valley enters its first WAC Tournament as winners of three straight, matching the longest win streak of the season. The Wolverines are unbeaten in their last four contests.
UVU defeated Bakersfield, 3-1, on the road on Friday in the only prior meeting between the teams. Thursday's winner will face host Seattle in Friday's second semifinal.
In other WAC action on Sunday's final day of the regular season, UNLV defeated Grand Canyon, 2-1, to clinch the WAC regular season title outright. The Rebels will be the top seed, while Seattle U, which drew with Bakersfield, finished with 20 points and will be the No. 2 seed. Both UNLV and Seattle will receive a bye into Friday's semifinal.
Incarnate Word (19 points) finished in third but is not eligible for the tournament due to its reclassification from Division II, putting Utah Valley in the third spot. Missouri-Kansas City and San José State will be No. 4 and No. 5 seeds, respectively, and will face off in the other quarterfinal match on Thursday with the winner drawing UNLV in the semifinal. Every match of the tournament can be seen live on the WAC Digital Network.
