MALIBU, Calif. -Â Utah Valley University dropped its second straight game at Pepperdine, 9-2, after a five-run eighth inning allowed the Waves (5-1) to pull away late.
The Wolverines (2-5) trailed 2-0 in the third when Jackson Kunz and Kade Andrus led off with consecutive singles. They both moved up 90 feet on a sacrifice bunt by Riley White before Zach Slesk then doubled into the corner in left, tying the game at 2-2.
Pepperdine, as it did in the first two innings, scored single runs in both the third and the fourth. The Waves took a 3-2 lead in the third when Brad Anderson scored on a wild pitch. Anderson drove home the fourth run with a two-out base hit to bring in Austin Davidson and inning later.
The Wolverines threatened in the seventh, with runners at the corners and two outs, but couldn';t trim the deficit, before Pepperdine put the game out of reach with the five-run eighth inning.
Andrus had two hits to lead the way for UVU with seven different players each collecting two hits apiece for the Waves.
Danny Beddes (0-1) took the loss for Utah Valley, surrendering four runs (three earned) in 3.1 innings. Jackson McClelland (2-0) allowed two runs on six hits and struck out three in picking up the win for Pepperdine.
The Wolverines will try and salvage a game in the series on Sunday at 1 p.m. PT/2 p.m. MT. Ryan Evans will start on the mound for UVU.
