Wolverines drop midweek at UNLV, 8-3

March 25, 2014

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Utah Valley University dropped a midweek contest at UNLV, 8-3, on Tuesday night at Earl E Wilson Stadium. Greyson Bogden and Craig Brinkerhoff both homered for the Wolverines (7-17) but a five-run seventh proved to be the difference for the Rebels (17-7).

Bogden put the Wolverines (7-17) up 1-0 when he hit a solo home run, his first, with one out in the first. UNLV, which is ranked 25th in the latest Perfect Game poll, scored in each of the first three innings to lead 3-1.

Edgar Montes, who had an RBI single in the second inning, led off the bottom of the seventh with a solo home run to left center. Later in the frame, Patrick Armstrong delivered a big blow, a three-run home run that gave the Rebels an 8-1 lead.

Brinkerhoff's home run, his third of the year, came with two down in the ninth and followed Cam Zollinger's first hit in a Wolverine uniform. Zollinger, a Utah transfer, made his first start after becoming eligible on Monday.

UVU finished with seven hits on the night but were controlled by UNLV starter Kenny Oakley, who pitched 7.1 innings and struck out 10. Oakley moved to 1-2 with the win as he and Brayden Torres combined to strike out 14 batters. Devin Nelson pitched into the seventh and was saddled with the loss. Freshman Patrick Wolfe pitched 1.1 scoreless innings for UVU, striking out a pair.

The Wolverines return home and back to WAC play on Friday night with the first of three games against Bakersfield. Friday's game is set for a 6 p.m. start.
