OREM, Utah -- Utah Valley University heads to SEC Country for a match up at Arkansas on Saturday at 2 p.m. CT/1 p.m. MT. The game will air on the SEC Network (DirecTV 611, DISH 408/404, Comcast 765) and on the Watch ESPN app. Fans can also listen live on ESPN 960 and WolverineGreen.com.
It's the final non-conference road game of the season for the Wolverines (5-8) and the last contest before beginning Western Athletic Conference action on Jan. 10 against Seattle U at home in the UCCU Center.
Arkansas has won four straight and is unbeaten in nine games at home so far this season. The high-scoring Razorbacks (10-2) are averaging 84.9 points per game, which leads the SEC and ranks eighth nationally. They are also third in the country in assists (19.6) and fifth in turnover margin and lead the SEC in eight different team statistical categories including hitting 40.7 percent from three.
"Arkansas has terrific athleticism and length," said UVU head coach Dick Hunsaker. "They are going to continue their tradition of full court pressure for 40 minutes. It will be a real test and opportunity for us to play against that style."
6-foot-11 sophomore forward Bobby Portis leads the team with an average of 17.2 points per game on 58.3 percent shooting. Portis, a preseason All-SEC first team selection, is also averaging 7.7 rebounds per game and has double-doubles in his last two contests. He is one of 50 players named to the preseason Wooden Award watch list and one of 24 on the USBWA's Oscar Robertson Trophy watch list for National Player of the Year. Junior Michael Qualls is scoring 15.8 points for the Razorbacks, who are coached by Mike Anderson.
The game at Arkansas is the second time UVU has faced the Razorbacks in Fayetteville. The only prior meeting was Nov. 22, 2011, a 67-59 Arkansas victory. In that game, current UVU assistant coach
Ben Aird finished with 12 points, 14 rebounds and three blocks as Utah Valley held a leading heading into the final media timeout before a late Razorback run.
The Wolverines are coming off of an 83-50 win, their most lopsided victory of the year, on Tuesday night at home against Bristol Univeristy.
Mitch Bruneel scored 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds in a game UVU held a 51-25 edge in rebounds.
Donte Williams scored 13 and
Eli Robison had a career-high seven boards while
Zach Nelson and
Chad Ross each had six rebounds in a game all 13 players on the active roster saw the floor.
Following Utah Valley's WAC-opener on Jan. 10 against Seattle, the Wolverines will host Grand Canyon on Jan. 15.
