OREM, Utah – A goalmouth scramble resulted in a golden goal from
Skyler Milne as No. 25 Utah Valley University opened WAC play with a 2-1 win over Air Force on Friday night at Clyde Field.
Milne's goal came in the 93rd minute of play and helped the Wolverines (8-2-0, 1-0-0) notch their second straight come-from-behind win.
"We found ourselves in a very similar position to the Fullerton match and I told the guys at halftime, 'we've been here, we know what it feels like, and we know what we need to do to adjust,' " said UVU head coach
Greg Maas. "We had to dig in deep and show great resiliency and really had to push against a great Air Force team."
On the scramble,
Austin Buxton got his head on the ball twice; the first a blocked shot before his second effort allowed Milne to deliver the game-winner.
It was Buxton who scored the equalizer in the 66th minute to allow UVU the overtime opportunity. With his back to goal, Buxton took a pass from
Karson Payton and scored on a strike to the back post.
"Austin had a tremendous finish and that put us in a position where we were able to press forward," said Maas.
Air Force (3-5-0, 0-1-0) took a 1-0 lead in the first half on a goal by Tucker Bone in the 44th minute. The goal came on a Gus Jensen assist after Bone initially passed to Jensen and then got it right back at the top of the box, scoring near the back post.
Utah Valley had a 17 shots overall and were on frame seven times. The Falcons eight shots, four of which were on goal.
The Wolverines host Missouri-Kansas City on Sunday at 1 p.m. in WAC play. The Kangaroos opened conference play on Friday at No. 24 Seattle U, falling 5-1.
