OREM, Utah – Three first-half goals propelled 25th-ranked Utah Valley University to a 3-0 shutout of Missouri-Kansas City in WAC men's soccer on Sunday at Clyde Field.
The Wolverines are now 9-2-0 overall and 2-0-0 in the WAC, with the nine wins matching the total games won during the team's inaugural season in 2014. The nine wins is also tied with WAC foe Seattle U for the second-highest win total in the country, one shy of national leader and consensus No. 1 Creighton.
Paul Hoffmeister had a goal and two assists for the Wolverines, who also had goals from
Karson Payton and
Skyler Milne.
Aaron Meyer had a pair of assists while Milne also assisted on Payton's fourth goal – and fourth game-winner – of the year.
"Getting through that win over Air Force (on Friday) allowed us to relax a little bit and move forward and today the guys had a complete 90-minute performance," UVU head coach
Greg Maas said.
UVU took a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute when Hoffmeister and Milne combined to find a streaking Payton right inside the six-yard box, with a finish into the lower left corner.
Just over 10 minutes later, Milne scored to give Utah Valley a 2-0 lead. Meyer found Hoffmeister, who dribbled up the left side and fed Milne, who scored on a toe poke to the far post.
Hoffmeister got his goal in the 23rd minute, taking a long pass from Meyer and then scoring with his left foot to the near post. The goal was his third of the season.
"Paul was very sharp in our warm ups and we knew he'd come away with something today. His ability to both score and create goals is fantastic," Maas said.
The clean sheet for Utah Valley is the team's fifth this season with goalkeeper
Derek Wilcox recording one save to earn his second shutout. The Wolverines outshot the Kangaroos (2-6-1, 0-2-0) 11-7 overall and 6-1 on goal.
The Wolverines will now hit the road for the two-game Texas trip next week where they'll face the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley on Friday and Houston Baptist next Sunday.
