Wolverines top UNLV to advance to WAC title match

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Utah Valley University advanced to the title match of the 2015 WAC Men's Soccer Tournament with a 1-0 win over UNLV on Friday at Durwood Soccer Stadium. The Wolverines (14-5-1) will face regular season champion No. 15 Seattle U, 4-0 winners over CSU Bakersfield in the other semifinal.

Skyler Milne's header in the 66th minute served as the game's only goal and came on an Aaron Meyer corner kick. For Milne, it was his team-high ninth goal while Meyer recorded his WAC-leading 12th assist, which also ranks second nationally.

"I knew Aaron was going to put the ball in a good spot, I just had to shake my defender," Milne said. "Luckily I found the ball and it found the back of the net."

"We've been very good on set pieces this year," head coach Greg Maas said. "It's something that we focus on. Aaron delivered a fantastic ball and Skyler's goal was absolutely unbelievable."

Utah Valley picked up the first postseason win in program history and is now one win away from securing its first trip to the NCAA Tournament. The win over UNLV was also avenges an earlier overtime loss to the Rebels (12-7-1), who won last season's WAC Tournament and the league's auto-bid.

"This was a game that our players had been looking forward to," Maas said. "We had the second seed and the bye and the guys took advantage of that. It took us 10-15 minutes into the game to settle down. Once we got possession in the midfield and started to involve our wings things opened up for us."

UVU finished with 19 shots overall, with six on goal, compared to just eight shots for UNLV, one of which was on frame.

Sunday's match begins at 1 p.m. CT/noon MT. The Redhawks defeated Utah Valley 2-0 last Saturday, Nov. 7 at Clyde Field in the final regular season match for both teams. Seattle U has won eight straight and 15 of its last 16.
