Wolverines fall short of WAC Tournament Title on PKs

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Utah Valley University's bid for the WAC's automatic bid came up just short as No. 15 Seattle U captured the men's tournament title on penalty kicks, 5-4. The teams played to a 1-1 draw through 110 minutes, setting up the PKs.

The Wolverines (14-5-2) now await the NCAA Selection Show on Monday at 11 a.m. MT, to see if they are awarded an at-large bid. A bid would be the program's first, in just it's second season of competition.

"That was a championship performance that I couldn't be more proud of. We deserved better, and our response going down a man, was nothing short of remarkable," said UVU head coach Greg Maas. "I am confident our season is not over, and we'll be rewarded in tomorrow's NCAA Selection Show."

Alex Neff scored on a direct kick in the 66th minute, bending the ball into the upper right 90 from just inches outside the 18. A two-time, first-team All-WAC performer, Neff was also named to the All-Tournament Team along with Skyler Milne and Connor Salmon.

Utah Valley held a 1-0 advantage until the Redhawks (17-3-1) were awarded a penalty kick in the 87th minute, which Hamza Haddadi converted to force overtime.

In the 90th minute of action, UVU goalkeeper Collin Partee was shown a red card and the Wolverines were forced to play the final 20 minutes down a man. It also put redshirt freshman Avery Miller into goal for the first time in his college career. Miller recorded two saves over the final 23 minutes of regulation and overtime.

The draw ended Seattle U's eight-match winning streak, also extending its unbeaten streak to nine. The Redhawks are in favorable position to receive a national seed and a first-round bye in the NCAA Tournament.
