Agnew scores 21, Utah Valley edges out Boise State 72-70

BOISE, Idaho—Behind a career high 21 points from junior Georgia Agnew, the Utah Valley University women's basketball team defeated the defending Mountain West Tournament Champions Boise State 72-70, giving the Wolverines their first road win since Jan. 2014 and a 3-1 record on the season.

In addition to Agnew's 21, junior Rebecca MaWhinney had 10, and Rhaiah Spooner-Knight had 15 points. Mariah Seals tallied seven, while Taylor Gordon and Deijah Blanks each grabbed six points. Sam Loggins had five and Patrice Toston had two to round out the Wolverine scoring. Loggins led on the boards with a season-high nine rebounds, while Spooner-Knight pulled down eight, Gordon had seven, and Blanks grabbed six.  Agnew also had a career high two three-pointers made in the contest.

"We are so excited, this is a big win for us, a landmark win for our program. This is a turning point for our players," head coach Cathy Nixon said. "For the last couple years we have been in close games, and it has been a point of emphasis for us in the offseason that we would close out these tight games. Our girls really kept their composure through 21 lead changes, and we believed we could win. This is why we did all those drills, so when we were in the situation, that the habits they have created would lead them to success. Tonight we are going to enjoy this one, and we hope to carry this momentum through the next few weeks."

At the half, Utah Valley closed a deficit that was as high as nine to just three points at 32-29. With 17 seconds remaining in the first quarter, Agnew laid it in to tie the quarter at 13 points apiece.

The lead changed 21 times in the matchup and was tied nine times. The Wolverines headed to the charity stripe 25 times, while the Broncos shot just 7-of-8 free throws. Utah Valley also contributed 23 points off the bench, to BSU's seven. The Wolverines delivered Boise State their first loss of the 2015-16 season.

Utah Valley closed the third quarter behind Boise State (2-1) 53-52 and traded baskets in the fourth quarter until a pair of free throws from Spooner-Knight tied the game at 58-58 with 6:52 left to play.

A Bronco three-pointer from Shay Shaw and a jumper from Marta Hermida gave Boise State a five-point lead with 5:12 left to play. Utah Valley answered with a huge Agnew trey and a layup from senior Patrice Toston, followed by a layup from Loggins. Loggins then drew a Bronco foul and earned a free-throw to regain a UVU lead with just under three minutes left to play.

The Broncos returned with an Miquelle Askew layup, but a deep MaWhinney three-pointer gave the Wolverines a 69-67 edge with under two minutes left to play. Boise State's Brooke Pahukoa responded with another big three-pointer to take the lead 70-69 with 1:17 left to play. A missed Seals trey and an Agnew foul left the Wolverine stranded at 70-69 with thirty seconds left to play. A costly Bronco turnover was tipped towards the UVU basket by Blanks and recovered in stride by Taylor Gordon, who laid it in on a fast-break to change the lead 71-70 for the sixth time in the quarter and nine seconds left to play in the contest.

Boise State forward Shaw fouled with seven seconds left to play, and Seals made one of two free throws to give UVU a 72-70 edge. Seals then blocked a Yaiza Rodriquez three-pointer as time expired to give Utah Valley their first road win since January 2014.

UVU will head home to take on Dixie State on Saturday Nov. 21 and San Francisco on Nov. 23, to wrap up six games in ten days for the Wolverines.
