RENO, Nevada—Utah Valley University women's basketball secured its sixth straight win 73-65 over Nevada on Friday night at the Lawlor Events Center in their first game of the Nugget Classic.
The victory marks UVU's second-straight win on the road, and second straight win over Mountain West foes. The contest is one of four-straight road games for the Wolverines.
Four Wolverines scored in double digits with
Georgia Agnew scoring a team-high 16,
Rhaiah Spooner-Knight with 15,
Mariah Seals tallied 13 points and
Taylor Gordon had 11. Rebecaa MaWhinney chipped in 8 points, while
Deijah Blanks added six, and
Sam Loggins and
Karlee Norris each had two points. MaWhinney also had a team-high six rebounds.
Midway through the third quarter, Seals and MaWhinney each grabbed a three-pointer to kick off a 19-2 run that would last the rest of the quarter, giving Utah Valley a comfortable 58-43 lead going into the fourth quarter. The Wolverines lengthened the lead to as much as 20 (67-47) and did not relinquish the advantage.
Nevada (0-5) closed the quarter on a 9-0 run, but could not get any closer as time
expired.
"We took the momentum in that third quarter because we did a better job on the defensive boards. We were able to get to the rim offensively in the second half, specifically Georgia and Mariah became aggressive and made it to the basket," head coach
Cathy Nixon said. "Back-to-back road wins is always good, and tomorrow we will be challenged at a whole different level. We have a quick turnaround, but we know we can put together a good game against Alabama. We are focusing on us, and I know we can be competitive if we can do a good job on the boards. The game will be physical, but as long as we have a presence on the boards and limit Alabama's second chance and transition opportunities we can put together another competitive game."
The game was tied at the half, after Spooner-Knight's two free throws with 37 seconds remaining in the first half broke up a three-minute scoring drought for Utah Valley, tying up the contest at 32-32.
Of Utah Valley's total 73 points, 46 of which came from inside the paint, compared to UVU's last outing against San Francisco, where the Wolverines had just 26 coming from inside the key.
The Wolverines will remain in Reno and look to take home two wins in the Nugget Classic, when they take on SEC-foe Alabama, who defeated Middle Tennessee State 64-46 today in the first contest of the tournament. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m MT tomorrow at the Lawlor Events Center. A live stream and live stats will be available through GoWolfPack.com.
