SAN ANTONIO, Texas—
Marcel Davis scored a game-high 19 points and
Hayes Garrity made a splash in his first action of the season with 17 points to lead the Utah Valley University men's basketball team to an 83-78 road win at UTSA Saturday night at the Convocation Center.
Â
With the win, Utah Valley improves to 5-6 overall on the season. UTSA falls to 2-10 with the loss. The Wolverines have now won three straight dating back to a double overtime win over Weber State on Dec. 9.
Â
Tied 76-76 with 1:55 to play, Davis drove into the paint and hit a layup to give UVU a 78-76 advantage. After a missed UTSA shot on the other end, Davis knocked down a 15-footer as the shot clock expired to secure an 80-76 UVU lead with just 48 seconds remaining. Davis hit a free throw and
Konner Frey went 2-for-2 at the line over the final 30 seconds to claim the victory.
Â
"I'm so happy for our guys," said Utah Valley head coach
Mark Pope. "Our guys battle and we had guys do some great things tonight. Hayes jumps right back into the lineup and knocks down his first four threes, including one at the halftime buzzer. Marcel has the play of the game as he hits a huge jumper with less than a minute to go and as the shot clock expires. Every single one of our guys contributed tonight and I couldn't be more proud."
Â
Davis scored his 19 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the field. He also pulled down five rebounds and dished out five assists. Garrity collected his 17 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the floor, including a career-best 5-of-6 clip from beyond the arc. Garrity, who has battled an injury, made his first appearance in a game since playing in UVU's NIT game at California on March 19, 2014.
Â
Jaden Jackson and
Konner Frey were also in double figures with 16 and 12 points, respectively. Jackson hit 6-of-10 shots from the field, including 4-of-6 shots from long range. Frey knocked down 3-of-5 shots from the floor, 2-of-2 shots from three-point range and 4-of-4 shots from the charity stripe.
Â
Andrew Bastien led the Wolverines on the boards with 10 rebounds. The junior center also tallied six points and three blocks on the night.
Â
Utah Valley shot a season-best 54.5 percent from the field while holding UTSA to a 42.9 percent clip. The Wolverines connected on 11 three-point field goals. UVU out-rebounded UTSA 41-34.
Â
Utah Valley will continue play on the road as the Wolverines travel to Louisville, Kentucky to participate in the Billy Minardi Classic Dec. 22-23. UVU will take on UNC Wilmington on Dec. 22 before facing No. 19 Louisville on Dec. 23. UVU's game against Louisville will be broadcast live on ESPNU.
